Kitchen Cabinets: Replace or Reface?

Do your kitchen cabinets need updating? If money isn't an issue, you can simply choose to fix the problem by replacing your old cabinets with new ones. Though if you are like most people, you have to pick and choose home improvements carefully to meet budgets and time restrictions.

If you choose to reface your cabinets, you'll probably save a lot of money. And if your cabinet boxes need no work at all, you are looking at simply replacing or painting cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Therefore, the price of your project will depend mostly on the materials you choose to use, and whether you want to refinish the old cabinet doors or replace them altogether.

Refacing isn't for every kitchen though. And most importantly, it doesn't address the issue of a poor kitchen layout. Other conditions that rule out refacing include cabinets that are beginning to fall apart or weren't well built to begin with. If you have any of these problems, you shouldn't consider refacing and it’s probably time to put those cabinets out of their misery. New kitchen cabinets, doors and drawers are designed to last for many years.
