The permitting department for your municipality will want to see documentation on the wall you wish to remove. The contractor cannot obtain permitting for your wall removal project without one of two things:

• A stamped letter from a structural engineer stating the particular wall is not load bearing and can be removed.
• If the wall is load bearing, a stamped set of blueprints notating exactly how the wall must be re-framed with a structural load-bearing header in place to bear the weight after the wall is removed (building inspectors will use this information during the inspection process).
